cannibalism lover here, I've yet to develop a taste for human meat or feel any sympathy for actual cannibals

fiction DOES affect reality it just isnt on a 1:1 basis which doesn't actually support profic ideals very much. it isn't this black and white

Like I read Frankenstein, I didn’t come out thinking I could rob graves. I read about French executions, I didn’t come out thinking I should buy a guillotine. 🤦🏻♂

No hate to you (i am profic), but to a certain degree, it does. Not in the way people say it, like ur gonna play cod and come out of it murdering people, but it does have power to shape the way you think. It has the power to teatch you something, or make you feel emotions, make you take interest in things that you might haven't if you didn't interact with that media. It does shape your reality.

oh god, I was in so many spaces I shouldn't have been when I was a pre teen and I agree, it warped my vision of romance really young. I grew up, thankfully, but as an adult I can discern and separate fiction and reality in a way I couldn't. I still wish I could have kept myself in more pg spaces, but the internet was very different back then. the tagging system makes it so easy to avoid the more crude things

I have horrific intrusive thoughts (yes REAL intrusive thoughts, not the quirky "oh im gonna cut my hair :D") and if I can seperate those thoughts *in my head* from who I am as a person, yall can seperate fiction from reality o7

Fiction does affect reality. Example: columbine. Eric and Dylan were heavily heavily inspired by Natural Born Killers

ocd haver here, i get where you’re coming from. don’t say ts, it’s an oversimplification of what people with ocd think thinking fiction affects reality, not about purity, at least for many

this is true, but I do feel like "fiction affects reality" IS a true statement. art affects reality, and writing is an art form. activists works for example, can change the world around them for the better.

yes, fiction can affect reality. But not in this way, if you read a fanfiction, keep one thing in mind: NOTHING going on in the fiction is reality. I was raised in a Christian household and had thoughts that I would get found out and I would be punished for those things. I have since gotten over those thoughts and have NEVER felt better. And I can know the difference between fiction and reality and tell myself "Hey this isn't right!" So I don't endorse it in reality

i will say this: imo people who use fiction to justify what they’re doing would have used any excuse. getting rid of the fiction doesn’t solve the issue, it treats a symptom. before people had fiction to blame they said god/satan made them do it

I hate when they bring up propaganda as a gotcha moment. Propaganda is NOT the same as a damn book. A book can have propaganda in it. But that’s different than a fanfiction. You CAN be influenced by PROPAGANDA in the book. Not a fiction that has no propaganda in it. Propaganda is its own thing.

Fox :
Fiction CAN skew reality, but only when it's in addition to social influences. Advertisements, for example, are fiction, but they also have a social pressure aspect to them. Same with how pop culture can change societal norms, but only when society steps in to add those social pressures.
