The Thadingyut light festival marks the time when Lord Buddha descended to earth from Ta-warain-tha Heaven where for three Lenten months he had been preaching to the Celestial Being who in the previous human life was his mother, Queen Maya, who had died giving birth to the baby Prince Siddhattha who would become the Buddha Gautama. To welcome His return with great joy, the celestials and humans lit the way from the heaven to earth. Annually, Myanmar Buddhists celebrate the Holy Light Festival before, during and after the Full Moon Day of Thadingyut by offering oil lamps, lanterns, candles and incense at pagodas and religious buildings so also illuminating public buildings and houses with colorful electric bulbs at night. Thadingyut celebrations also include charity feasts and paying respect to the elders by offering gifts and receiving blessings.
