why do they need to be in a container? Could I make my own casket? (before I die, of course)

I want my family to spend as little as possible on me. Save your money for the living. The funeral home should get a fair profit, but other than that just burn me up or Terramate me!

Thanks for the info. I will be the first person on my side to be eventually cremated. My parents are buried in what we thought was a respectable cemetery. Their plots look horrible, yellow overgrown grass, sunken grave markers. We have reached out to the cemetery on multiple occasions. Nothing has ever been done about it

$1000 for something to be incinerated? The funeral industry has no shame.

This is so different to funerals here in the UK. Anything but a metal casket can go in the cremator. Handles on the sides, even with burial we only use side handles. The coffin the family purchase goes with that deceased. No changing or reusing of coffins. They start at about £450 go up to about £2000

Can you create it as the bottom of the casket is cardboard box but you just don’t have the lid on top is that correct?

So my husband was probably in a cardboard box? I didn't know that. He requested simple cremation, no urn, no service.

When my grandma passed we had to cremate her for financial reasons. I insisted on a witness cremation, but my uncle balked at paying for anything more than the “alternative container” so I ended up placing my grandmother into the oven in nothing but a cardboard box, body bag, and dirty tshirt. Not exactly dignified…
