I’ve honestly switched most of my plants over my alocasias are all in hydro now and thriving, while my anthuriums are loving full sphagnum moss. My monsteras are taking off super fast in a sphagnum moss + coco peat mix too. Honestly, chunky soil just never worked for me since I tend to underwater like crazy.

I mixed foxfarm, bark, and perlite and the soil is still soggy 5 days later and my thai con got root rot! and it has lots of drainage holes. I want to water weekly to make things easy so next time im making it extra chunky, every potting soil I've tried just holds too much water.

I started researching the natural habitat of these plants to get a better idea of what they needs... ex: I unalived my 1st peace lily because I used chunky, turns out it hates that and prefers perlite and sandy soil 😵💫😵💫😵💫 the new one seems okay so far. we shall see. 🤷🏽♀️✨

To remedy a too-chunky mix, I sprinkle some coco coir on the top of the soil and top water. The coco coir will drain into the soil and fill in those air pockets.

I've been doing potting soil, perlite, orchid bark at 2:1:1 for my aeriods. Even with this chunky mix, I can go 1 to 2 or more weeks for watering! How often to and appropriate concentration of fertilizer isn't clear but my plants seem to be thriving so far!
