Math was all just memorization of equations with no explanation when I was a kid…. It never stuck with me.

Yes! This! The US doesn’t teach math as just another form of literacy and so people are scared by the MOST basic stuff.

problem is maths requires you to develop an abstract way of thinking and teachers focus on memorization instead of teching the the way of thinking (which also helps you develop highly analytical minds)

Must disagree. I grew up in former comunist/socialist country and can tell you that even there math was not for everyone.

I CAN do math if given enough time but most teachers I've ever had always expected you to understand the material immediately and sucks to be you otherwise. It took until I was in COLLEGE to understand how to add and subtract fractions because its the first time I've had a teacher who actually cared

i came from Ukraine and i am terrible at math. They are not good at teaching math. They just teach everything at a really fast pace from an early age. if you can keep up you end up going really far if you can't you get left behind and nobody cares.

universally, solving math equations can be either innately interesting to you or innately boring, which is where the idea of "maths brains" comes from. but agreed that it's a skill that everyone can learn, just like languages, cooking, driving etc.

Mathematics is great, but in my experience mathematical pedagogy is lacking, at least at the collegiate level. It always felt like a history lesson rather than teaching the current understanding

I know for a fact that my math fundamentals are bad because my school simply was interested in teaching quick. They bragged a grest deal about how early they started us with algebra. That’s great for their PR, but half of us were lost.

As someone who had to relearn math in college, yes. If you don’t learn the way they teach it in elementary/middle/high school or if you take longer, you get left behind

where did you get this information? i lived in Russia and Kazakhstan and never have i ever encountered the mentality of “math is for everyone”, its quite the contrary actually. We divide people in those who are talented in social studies (гуманитарии) and those who are good with maths (технари)

In former Soviet countries, people very much believe that you either have a math brain or a humanities brain. They just think more people have math brains.

I have dyscalculia, I’ve failed almost every math test I’ve ever taken because I can do the equations but the numbers always end up wrong

between dyscalculia, and the fact that the so called reason behind any math problem is "just 'cause. that's just how it's done. it just is" which isn't logic at all to me 😭 idk man. not universally understandable in My eyes 😂

As a math tutor for 20yrs, I can tell you it’s teachers. Some kids I knew I could raise their SAT math 400pts if the had Mrs.H in third grade at this one school bc she gave them the best foundation👏 Also, this one HS Tchr whom I called “clean-up” bc he cleaned up all his students number theory…I tutored A LOT of kids & I saw the patterns 👏👏👏
