Fun fact on why Gandalf feared him: Gandalf (Olorin) and Sauron (Marion) are both Maiar (Angels) from Valinor. Sauron went with his master Morgoth (Melkor) to control Middle Earth. When Morgoth fell, Sauron feared he would be punished for following his master, so he hid and stayed eventually continuing Morgoths plans on Middle Earth. The Valar sent 5 other Maiar to stop Sauron; Radagast, Saruman, Alatar, Pallando, and Gandalf. They were all sent in mortal shells and in weakened states. Sauron went to Middke Earth of his own accord and was not weakened. Gandalf was also trained by Manwe and Nienna who taught him to be kind, patient and to have pity. Unlike Sauron whom was trained by Morgoth to be obedient, abitious, and destructive. So Gandalf knew because of these things he had no chance at all facing him alone. He also knew the only way he would be able to defeat Sauron on his own if need be, he would have to become the master of the one ring which would then make him the new evil and corrupted. This is the same for Galadriel, which the movie briefly hints at. Gandalf is mostly scared of becoming corrupt just like Sauron did, as his body can die but not his spirit, he is immortal.
