I feel like my ADHD is only a a problem because it means I'm a terrible robot for the capitalists to exploit.

to claim that therapists are “complicit with oppressive systems” is a fancy way to say nothing of substance. the argument can be used to refer to any job that people need to survive that is also complicit with oppressive systems, which is almost every job in every industry. I agree with most of your broader claims, but I don’t see the utility in framing therapy, an objectively good thing for disabled peoples under capitalism, as “violence”. It does not further a revolutionary cause and it does not offer any meaningful critique. The world would certainly be a worse place tomorrow if therapy did not exist.

Therapist here! One of my favorite quotes is the following: “it is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” Classic therapy spends too much time pathologizing individuals, yes. Therapy needs a theoretical unheaval and a massive rebrand, because I truly believe it has the potential to be lifesaving if done correctly

i feel like this is one of those things that just doesn’t even really need to be mentioned because the problem is so clearly just capitalism and nothing is going to change unless capitalism changes

as a psych student i can’t say i resonate with this. this take oversimplifies a very nuanced service. therapy in itself is not violence. if you have a bad therapist i can see how it would be, but therapy helps so many people (myself included). no matter how many accommodations you give some mental illnesses will still affect quality of life. therapy is a helpful tool to reflect, reprocess and get tools to deal with difficult situations. abolishing therapy would be detrimental. bad experiences with therapists are awful and can really put ppl off of therapy, but i swear if ppl keep looking to find the right one/type they won’t regret it

so like, you do understand that just like with glasses, disable people/neurodivergent people would still need a diagnosis and treatment for their condition and it would still make them UNABLE to participate in certain activities?
yes this problem is agrevated by capitalism (like any health issue), but most of disabilities are not CAUSED by it.
also some disabilities don't interfere with your exploration under capitalism but obviously others do, and there is definitely nuance under it.
whorever both psychiatrist and therapist are only and exclusively worried abould improving the patient quality of life, and yes adjusting to society IS befecitial for a biopsychosocial being like any human.
finally, don't take out of context antropology studies and try to apply it to medicine like we don't do it already in the academic setting, and as if our guidelines are not made with all that in mind.

Comment section shows how difficult it is to remain deeply critical of the tools available to us. Is therapy needed in our current world? Yes. Is it’s current application, purpose and it’s history rooted in oppression? Also yes.

I’m not sure why there’s negative comments on this… as someone w a degree in mental health counseling —yes! A large majority of counseling is oppressive. As the caption says, CBT is particularly oppressive.

the social model is also flawed and prioritises physical disability. i would be disabled no matter the society or situation i was in.

This take is outdated tbh. I agree therapy has many systemic issues but to make the arguement that disability is only disabling due to the society we live in takes away from so many stories and traumas of disabled folks. I personally struggle with pretty bad sensory issues and regardless of how accommodating society might be, my sensory issues will ALWAYS be disabling. The sun and the wind are not things you can hide from and they will always be overstimulating to me. This take diminishes the struggles of disabled folks a lot by saying ‘if you just had the right help, you’d be fine’

This has absolutely zero applicability in the real world and if applied would harm so so many individuals. Maybe one day we can reach a collective agreement and shift towards a world like the ideal one you describe but until we get there we need therapy

While I agree with you that therapy is often prescribed as a bandaid to generational and systemic racism and exploitation, harm reduction is real and exists for a reason. Discounting evidence-based harm reduction techniques and using such language as “therapy is violence,” may be correct, but what exactly are you achieving and who could you be stigmatizing or dissuading from asking loved ones for help as a consequence?

Let’s not generalize an entire system, psychiatrists are different medication is involved but every therapist is different and a lot of them are extremely empathetic people who change lives and enact change. Bad eggs exist in every field.

Yes therapy as an industry is weak and awful. However being married to a LCSW and therapist, I've helped her personally pick up food at a food bank for a homeless child. Social workers are often the janitors of capitalism. Therapists and social workers are forced to work under existing systems. Capitalism is the issue, not therapy or case work or medicine.

Yes and no. There are helpful components to therapy. Without acknowledging that this theory is incomplete at best.
