Part 1: Snow White and the Evil Queen Tomorrow: Cinderella Every time an animated princess was given a female villain, the contrast between their voices reflected how culture viewed women at the time. Snow White is all head voice and sits really high in the mask with almost zero chest resonance. She's breathy, light, childlike, and literally sounds like a little girl even though she's supposed to be 14. I've talked about the opera influence that was used in the performance in a previous analysis but that inspiration is softened into something more innocent than powerful. She goes up in pitch when she's excited or scared but never down. Her vowels are also extremely open and unguarded, there's no shaping or narrowing happening in her resonance at all, which technically reads as vulnerability. A voice with no edges is a voice with no defenses. The Evil Queen is the opposite of every single one of those choices. She has a chest voice, a low placement, a deliberately slow pace, and every word is fully formed and articulated. She sounds like a woman who is controlled, cold, and has never rushed for anyone or anything. Her resonance is also notably pharyngeal, meaning it sits back and deep in the throat rather than forward in the mask like Snow White's, which is what gives her that dark authoritative vibe. Even when she's the hag she adds rasp but it's still intentional, it's still a choice that she's made. Snow White was designed to sound like she needs rescuing while The Evil Queen was designed to sound like she doesn't need anything from anyone. #voiceactor #voiceover #movies #disney #animation
