Somebody can genuinely want to help people. But when the platform rewards reach, watch time, engagement, and repeat attention, there’s an incentive to package that help in ways that keep people coming back. The message can be sincere. The incentive shaping how it’s delivered can still be distorted. And that’s where it gets sinister. A person says something that makes thousands of people feel understood. The numbers go up. The platform recognizes a successful pattern and distributes it further. Now there’s a measurable reward for repeating what worked. Nobody has to sit down and decide to become a fraud. The incentives can gradually shape the behavior until looking like you’re helping people becomes easier to measure and reward than whether you’re actually helping them change. That’s the structural problem. And there’s an contradiction at the center somebody can accumulate enormous reach by telling people they’re enough exactly as they are. while the person listening might need to confront the very things keeping them stuck. Not every comforting message is harmful. difficult truth is helpful. neither popularity nor discomfort proves that something has value. The platform can measure whether people keep watching. It cannot establish, from watch time alone, whether their lives got. The metric becomes the public evidence of success, even when the outcome that supposedly justifies that success remains unmeasured. And once people start treating the metric as proof of their impact, the incentive has done more than shape the content. It’s shaped what they believe their work is worth.
