@shearflame: #greenscreenvideo If I gave you a $1.25 and told you to make a full meal out of it for me how well do you think you'd do? #schoollunch #healthymeals #Budgeting #4yp
I remember Michelle Obama tried to introduce some healthy initiative and the parents almost rioted. They don’t want it.😏

Subsidized programs are paid through tax money. Increasing the allowable subsidy instead of sending it abroad would improve school lunches. If schools were given more money for lunches in a subsidy program, they would find ways in spend it. The original guy is still correct.

Unpopular Opinion: Kids probably won't want to eat a lot of the food they'd end up making anyway. They're is a huge difference in the food eaten daily in Japan households compared to American. It would do no good to create these healthy lunch menus of the food is getting thrown away because they're not touching the cabbage salad or turkey burger being served

The money is going everywhere BUT staffing & equipment for education in general, let alone school breakfast & lunch programs.

theres a great video series on YouTube showing the inner workings of Japanese school lunches. Japan has their issues, but I think the difference is (and this is more about the culture of USA, not so much jpn) how insistence on American individualism prevents anything communal like a school lunch system thrive

The way my high school gave the same portions as the grade school and it was all the cheapest frozen/canned stuff they just warmed up. And they charged for it. Meanwhile the lunch ladies got the TV’s that one of the graduating classes donated for the cafeteria

It’s just budget. It’s literally just money. Fund the program and you can have it no problem. Hope this helps. Vote for the people who have education on their platform. 👍

Cause there is a political side that dont want to invest in our kids because of the possibility that 1 kid doesnt deserve it. Also corporation might lose profits if they cooperate. Greed takes priority over wellbeing of the country.

how is saying "our tax dollars" not applicable here? can't our tax dollars be used to raise that food budget if it were allocated there? like he's not wrong, our meal system is totally effed and it's because not enough of our taxes is allocated towards that, education/school in general, because it's being given to the military and politicians pockets. the money to feed the kids exists, its just not being used to do so.

I don’t see how saying out tax dollars are going somewhere else isnt applicable? If the money was directed towards funding better school lunches instead of other things then there would be more money for the lunches, so how could this not be an issue?

This is so validating. I was a healthcare chef for 15 years -hospitals and long term care -and I got $3.25-3.65 to feed a patient/resident ALL DAY. 3 meals, plus snacks, plus drinks. Over and over the joke is that school lunch and hospital food is so gross, but the reality is we do the best we can with the budget we are given. We definitely want to do more and provide higher quality, but until someone with the purse strings stops comparing fast food prices with restaurant quality, we simply cannot.

Just curious how large these schools are. I can't imagine what would go into serving prepared and made fresh food for 2000+ students in just one school.

It’s just about doable, but again, uneducated parents would riot. Every lunch could be a healthy, filling, protein-rich vegetarian or vegan meal. There are hundreds of options under $1.50 per adult serving. Dessert is seasonal fruit. Eliminate juice, chocolate milk, and items with no nutritional value, such as Uncrustables. Distribute the govt. cheese piling up in Missouri caves. Pay cooks, not SYSCO. Save billions in future health care costs.

Hm. I wonder. Unrelated, but Kansas City, MO just recalled its county executive because their property taxes went up after assessment (because the land value went up).

And that guy from Nomu started a company that employs trained chefs to do the cooking and recipe testing. Not all school cafeterias have that expertise to do that. I watched a doc on him and what he does is extraordinary but not all districts have even that much.

Schools are also required to only use district suppliers and they can't even keep stock of basics. Often, kids here get 10-15 minutes to actually eat by the time they've gotten through the line. They inhale something fast or just don't eat. It's a way bigger problem than just giving them fresh broth. 🫤
