sabito (his best friend) saved him after giyu was incapacitated by the first demon he fought in FS. Giyu was out for the rest of the selection and Sabito went on to slay almost every demon and save everyone. But he died to the same demon tanjiro killed on the mountain. After surviving giyu had survivors guilt and didn’t believe he was worthy of becoming a hashira despite honing his strength to a degree worthy of the pillars. “I’m not the water hashira” & “i’m not like the others” has a much deeper meaning. It means he doesn’t believe he’s worthy of being alive much less standing alongside the other Hashira. His character doesn’t leave this depressive state until after talking again w Tanjiro.
