🧱 One of the most misunderstood (and often disliked) figures connected to Freemasonry… Gerald Gardner (June 13, 1884 – February 12, 1964) If you’ve ever heard someone claim that Freemasonry is connected to witchcraft, chances are the story somehow traces back to this man. Gardner is widely considered the founder of modern Wicca, a pagan spiritual movement that emerged in the mid-20th century. Through books like Witchcraft Today (1954) and The Book of Shadows, he introduced the public to what he described as surviving traditions of pre-Christian witchcraft. Gardner moved in many esoteric circles. Rosicrucian groups. Occult societies. Ceremonial magic traditions. And somewhere in that story appears Freemasonry. Gardner later claimed Masonic connections, and records from the Grand Lodge of Ireland indicate that a man named Gerald B. Gardner joined Freemasonry in 1910 while in Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka). However, the lodge often associated with him — “Sphinx Lodge 113” — never actually existed. More importantly… Gardner resigned from Freemasonry long before his Wiccan movement emerged. Later in life he became involved with Co-Masonic and occult organizations, including the Fellowship of Crotona, which were not recognized by regular Freemasonry. But here’s where the confusion really begins. Gardner borrowed heavily from many traditions when constructing Wicca: • ceremonial magic • folklore • the writings of Aleister Crowley • medieval grimoires • and yes… some symbolic structure inspired by Freemasonry He used these influences to create the Gardnerian tradition of Wicca, which later spread around the world. And from that moment forward, critics of Freemasonry had a new talking point. They began claiming that Freemasonry was secretly connected to witchcraft. The reality is far less dramatic. Freemasonry is a fraternal organization focused on moral development, charity, and philosophical symbolism. Wicca is a modern pagan spiritual movement created in the 20th century. They are not the same thing, and regular Freemasonry has never practiced or endorsed witchcraft. Gardner’s story is simply a reminder of something important in Masonic history: Throughout the last two centuries, many people have been fascinated by our symbols, rituals, and allegories. Some studied them. Some misunderstood them. And a few… borrowed pieces of them to build something entirely new. Understanding the difference between history and speculation is part of the work every Mason must learn to do. Because light doesn’t come from repeating rumors. It comes from seeking truth. #Freemasonry #MasonicHistory #GeraldGardner #WiccaHistory #MasonicEducation
