@nicola_single_variety_co: Follow for more Food Business Insights! 💡 The biggest learning I had as a food buyer at Selfridges was to get rid of old stock QUICKLY. When a season had finished we would massively slash the cost of our old stock to get it sold within days, making space for new stock. It might feel like yours losing too much money on those products but the reality is that by replacing them with fresh new stock that will sell much better you’ll be making more money overall. No-one wants to buy a 2025 calender in Sept 🤯 #foodbusinessinsights #businessinsights #foodbusiness #smallbusinesslearnings
Tell that to sainsburys selling food that goes off on the day for 30p less

a shop or business selling well past season stuff at very small discount looks mean.. and selfish.. I start to question in my mind how do they treat staff.. why aren't they aware of the bigger picture..

I’ve worked in retail for years. The amount of ex promo delisted stuff that piles up in warehouses you wouldn’t even imagine. Especially when the stores don’t have a good handle on their inventory and warehousing etc.

I wonder why Selfridges do this, but M&S willingly throw away food rather than reduce it, as they don’t want people waiting for it to reduce in price before they buy it.

I feel we unconsciously feel like everything in the shop feels outdated when u realised some items very outdated. Does that mean all your electronics r not the latest for that price too? Is your food expired? Camping gears r not the most innovate?

Small businesses are so likely to do this too, the owner feels the discount in their own pocket too much. I’ve had to wrestle with owner-buyers who say “but that cost me £X” - treat all stock like milk, not wine.

B&M does this all the time but with almost identical stock. All down to 10p!

What if you want to reciprocate a decent amount of profit, some smaller businesses can’t afford to lose on stock? What would you advise in this case?

I used to work in Birmingham Selfridges and I loved the little section on the bottom floor near the bags where they would sell super reduced stuff for the staff 🤣

Selling old stock cheap is to get the customer into a routine of actually going in the shop in the first place.

getting rid of something for 5% margin is still better than not selling it at all

How about not buying loads of stock in the first place in the hope of getting them sold. Corporate greed is ruining the planet
