They absolutely dominated the big, top down projects like rockets, dams, and chess machines because you could just point the entire state at a single goal and shout “GO.” But things got shaky in the everyday details. Jeans never fit right. Bananas only showed up in magazines. Farms couldn’t feed the country without imported wheat. Cold War peer pressure pushed both sides to pour insane resources into moonshots and microchips.
