I’m blind and was born with osteoporosis and yeah. After school activities were a no! Even stuff that wasn’t fun like math tutoring!! My mom had to stay with me which was another level of awkward in high school!! The aides were off the clock and the school didn’t wanna get sued! Thankfully, i hate people so pep rally’s and prom are my version of hell so I loved the excuse not to go! But still! I get your point and on principle, it’s enraging and demeaning!

Our sons always attend after school activities either their dad or I would take them or I would pay a person to go. I would ask our sons what they were comfortable with. Dad would take them to football games and I would do the dance. Sometimes they just wanted me to sit in the parking lot incase they got overwhelmed. I would sit and read a book or hang out until they were ready to go home. I took our son to his class reunion this year and he had a great time. His class was great with him and very understanding of him and what he needed.

This is hurting me a little right now too. My son is a sophomore and he has a girlfriend this year so they are going to the dance. My daughter is a “freshman” but of course, she’s severe, she can’t go. It hurts me for her because she’s nonverbal, idk what she’s going to feel or think. It hurts me for me, because I want to help my daughter pick out a pretty dress, do her make up and her hair like I got to do in high school. But even if she could go, it would be the same experience as a “typical teenager” would have. Just heartbroken all around for her!

At my school we had a pre-prom and it was for special need kids and the regular kids would be there to help and hang out with them

Go with him...your daughter needs to understand that he has every right to be there as well. Coming from a sister and mother to autism 🙏 She will get over it. All love to you mama! I know you're trying to make everyone happy.

Why can’t you go? Are they telling you no? I went to every homecoming with Olivia because they didn’t have the proper staffing. My son took Olivia to prom at the public school. And then she also goes to special needs proms by herself now.

It might bother you but he might not care? Would it be too much stimulation for him or does he enjoy those environments?

Hmm. After school support is written into our IEPs. I had students with intellectual disabilities attend school dances and the school paid for support during these events. I have had students join school sports teams and the school paid for para support for their participation. Not only that but students from my self contained room were part of the homecoming court every single year. I would investigate that more.
