@purpleellacoach: Autistic shutdowns are less obvious but equally distressing as autistic meltdowns. I feel like they get talked about way less often. I’m a coach working with autistic and ADHD people to learn about how being neurodivergent impacts their lives and to build systems and environments that enable them to thrive. I experience shutdowns. When extremely pushed I’ve had meltdowns and they’re always seen as mental health crises.

This is maybe a silly question, but can meltdowns be delayed? Like this isn’t a safe moment/place/person but it happens later when it feels “possible”

I struggle with understanding all these terms even if I see examples. I always imagine the extreme stuff but when I search for the meaning or an explanation to what I'm experiencing I always get mostly an ASD or ADHD symptom. I don't wanna self diagnose but I can't tell if I might be on the spectrum or I'm just delusional

Those are shutdowns? I thought i was just overstimulated! It usually goes im zoning out not really feeling really or there when stuff is too much and if I can’t fix something or another it progresses into a meltdown (which for me means excessive hours long crying)

I have ADHD aswell as autism and I can go both ways at the same time, an explosive meltdown followed by a shutdown with a tint of shame for the explosive part. I can handle this better now knowing what is happening and why it happens but as a kid or in my teenage years I struggled a lot especially if it happened in front of my peers.

everyday I feel more and more unsure about myself and what is "normal"/average to feel but its not that is more being unable to remember when or how it was before when I was more able to function even though it wasn't great I know it wasn't this bad

Yes! I get both meltdowns & shutdowns! The worst thing is being accused of being lazy. Even if I say I’m overwhelmed the other person does not see that. They just see the inertia. Then you also get shutdowns leading to meltdowns especially if I’ve not had long enough to be quiet and take time for my shutdown to process.

This happened to me at work the other week and it was so scary, my manager almost called an ambulance because I just couldn’t respond to anything.

I think this is what I'm doing when I run to my bedroom when I'm overwhelmed and lie on my bed and hibernate. I've always needed to do this I just need complete and utter space away from people.

I find that shutdowns have always been my go to, even before realising I was autistic, although when I was very young and increasingly as I try to unmask meltdowns are happening, it’s becoming a struggle to keep my meltdowns internal

Can this happen at the end of a work day? As in, I can socialise at work with colleagues and clients pretty well but when I get home I don't want to interact or speak with anyone?

I don't know if you can call them meltdowns, because I think I can control them so much as to only have them in a safe environment? But then at home I have panic attacks

I shutdown more often in places where I don’t have a person I feel safe with, meltdowns can still happen around ppl I don’t feel safe with but I usually have to be pushed further and when that happens it takes so much more from me vs a meltdown around someone o feel safe with
