the pothole with this technique is its too restrictive on its own. You can use it to find colors that work for your piece, but after that you have to do your own work and it can be limiting to what colors and styles of coloring you use

my favorite thing to do, flat colors, turn off that layer, render in black in white, clip the flat colors over the rendering, gradient map, lower the gradient map opacity. I have saved gradients of specific vibes I want color picked from photos I take or I like (like tungsten lights, bright daylight, gas stations, forests etc)

Gradient maps help me SO MUCH with vibes. My old art was pretty monotone but this actually helps to work different colors in and set a scene

sadly im the opposite😭 i already know how to work with shading and different colors can work as shading itself but using actual grayscale means im only working with a color to dark gradient and i hate ittt😭💔🙏, doesnt mean its bad. its just my preference
