It's refreshing to see a different and honest reaction. All I see everywhere is people praising the book, praising the writing, praising the story 😭 I was thinking I was just completely wrong because I couldn't see it. Also, there is a big plot hole that I was hoping it was going to be explained at some point and it wasn't 💀

Honestly this entire story feels like it wanted to tackle some really meaty themes, but it was all handled so poorly, and so clumsily. Concepts and ideas keep being brought up and abandoned. It’s “not a romance” but the romance is the only fleshed out part of the story. I have so many annotations just pointing out how cartoonish the villains are (ESPECIALLY the women???) and how many “I don’t know why they’d tell her this” conversations there are. Like WHAT was that scene with Grace right at the very start? It existed purely to create a reveal (???) like 4 chapters later? At least the editor showed up part-time about 60% in I guess

I've started it today and it's not good... How many em dashes does one need? And grammatically? Don't even get me started on that. Repetitive! No emotions! Just a lot of nothing. I bet this book could've been 300 pages.

i had to give up at chapter 7. i couldn’t cope with the constant info dumping as their ‘world building’ and was just bored the whole time

I'm on page 450 and honestly I'm most of the time more bored than entertained because of the absurd amount of info dump in random moments. Is it worth continuing at this point?!

I was also disappointed with the worldbuilding and especially the way it was communicated to the reader. It's either page-long infodumping or "the bad guys" explaining their evil plans to Helena when they have no reason to. And I agree that its politics felt didactic and simplistic. I like also your point about how broad doesn't equal deep: by the end there were a lot of concepts and words that I had heard throughout the book but I never felt like I really "got" what they meant in practice. I also had some issues with how the romance as well as the gore were handled. I still enjoyed it overall and don't regret finishing it, but it's not the masterpiece people make it out to be IMO.

thank you, this is a TERRIBLE book 😭 even besides the points you made, it's just so repetitive and shallow and I didn't give a damn about any of the characters - I had to DNF if at 40%

It’s soooooo bad. Like the magic doesn’t make sense and why am I supposed to care about them. It loses a lot from not having a backstop of Harry Potter or handmaids tale, like the fanfic did

Hey, as someone who loves this book - thank you. Your give real commentary and insight on why it doesn’t work for you and while I don’t agree for myself, I can respect that as a reader, the style doesn’t do it for you. Your review will make me pay attention to these bits in my rereads and will help me be a better reader in the future.

I really wanted to love it bc I did love the fanfic but I couldn’t. The info dumping was overwhelming to me and I still had so many questions and so many things that were never expanded upon. Like in HP it was such a fantastical world that I could believe that children were basically in charge. I couldn’t understand why these super young people were tasked with these huge responsibilities in Alchemised and it was never explained well enough to make sense
