Just something to keep in mind — Ed Gein was found legally insane and diagnosed with severe psychosis and schizophrenia. He wasn’t driven by pleasure or cruelty like a typical killer; what he did came from deep delusion and a completely broken sense of reality. Calling him “evil” makes sense emotionally, but clinically, he was profoundly mentally ill and didn’t understand right from wrong in any normal way.

I think it’s okay for ppl to feel empathy for Gein as a child and what he had to endure. I think it’s okay to feel empathy towards his mental illness and lack of mental health knowledge and available help at the time. But he did commit horrific atrocities towards others and caused families tremendous grief. That can’t be excused.

Ed Gein was a horribly abused child, young man and adult. Yes he did horrible things. He was ill. His mother was even sicker. It’s ok to feel for a man that suffered a horrible life and, once medicated, was a MODEL patient. Let’s not forget that.
