On October 7, 2006, Eritrean singer Abraham Afewerki died tragically in the Red Sea near Massawa after drowning while trying to rescue a friend (Robel) whose foot was stuck in underwater quicksand. Abraham had returned to Eritrea at the time to work on a film project that aimed to highlight Eritrean culture and music, showing his dedication to promoting his country’s heritage. His passing at the age of 40 shocked the nation, as he was one of the most prominent musicians of his generation and a voice deeply connected to all Eritreans. Thousands attended his funeral in Asmara, and radio stations across the country played his songs in remembrance. Even years later, his influence remained strong within the diaspora, where his music had become an anthem of pride, resilience, and nostalgia for Eritreans living abroad.
