When did we become so powerless? I remember being hopeful for the future. That everything was going to continue getting better. But then, I also remember growing up being afraid of everything from quicksand to nuclear war, and in the modern day, even greater tragedies. And I always was taught there was an enemy between me and what I wanted, or what the world needed as a people. We were taught to be afraid of the bad guy. And that we always have to fight against the bad guy. So what happens when there is no bad guy? We invented one. The more vague and ambiguous, the bad guy can be well simultaneously, potentially being your next-door, neighbor, or an uncertain future that will certainly come to pass, unless you were able to do anything about it. That creates the feeling of powerlessness. And the way we’ve cope with that powerlessness is through political and religious identities, that demands an automatic and unconscious defense. In the end, we end up fighting against everything. And there’s a big difference between fighting against and fighting for something. Creation versus competition. We are built on competing. And this is why we are satisfied with political winds instead of things that actually improve our lives, because at least it feels good to be on the right side. We sacrifice improving our ourselves and our world for moral victories. And the only way to break out of it is to realize no one is coming to save you.
