I will never understand advocating for children with special needs to be in GenEd classrooms. They don’t get what they need and the GenEd kids also don’t get what they need bc too much time is spent managing behaviors and IEP needs. Nobody wins.

What are you doing outside of school to help prepare your child ? This does not just fall on the teachers.

Public school is no place for children that need individual education plans. We really should have them in their own school so that they can receive that individual education that they deserve. They’re just pushed through. 🥺

As a special ed teacher there are some children that should never been integrated into mainstream classrooms even with IPPs. There are children that will never grasp basic reading/writing or math skills. Those children would be better served spending the day being taught basic life and social skills. Like how to wait your turn or stand in line. How to tie your shoes, make yourself a sandwich, wash your clothes etc.

our district does a transition year, following graduation. It gives them the structure of school but it’s half day and they focus on helping students find jobs, living independently, etc

This is part of the problem with inclusion. In my class I have an extremely complex child and we’re trying to find ways to include him in pre-algebra….why?! To what end? I wish we could be providing a better program for him with what he needs.

I don't think she's blaming the school, she's just coping with the sometimes harsh reality of her son's cognitive limitations. Being a parent of a special needs child is a special kind of grief. Parents love their child, but it sometimes breaks their heart that their child's life experiences might be limited. Be kind. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

And this right here just confirms what I’ve been saying -why does my child have to go to school when he graduates he will be at the same level he started 💔💔💔also big hugs Van is such a ham and you and him bring so much light hope and laughter into the world 🌎 which is what we all need considering what is going on in this world 💔😏

I know this is the worst…I think we need to look at academic vs actual skills the kids need to be successful in life. I am not saying don’t teach academics but please let me teach my students things that they need to be happy and safe.

Yes, correct, public school is not equipped to handle a diagnosis of autism which is truly not even understood in the medical community. Everyone just does their best to find what students with austism can handle.

There’s a lot of defensiveness here, she wasn’t blaming the school. It’s just a hard reality that a lot of our parents face.

I don’t see this mom blaming anyone in this post. She’s expressing frustration and grief like anyone else would in her shoes.

Hey mama! It doesn’t define them! You are doing great and your unique light of your life is beautiful. Keep shining for them and YOURSELF!

We see this ALL the time. All these therapies and all this extra help either doesn't work at all or produce very poor results. It's become
job security while stressing kids and parents out.As someone who has worked with Autistic children for 25 years I am disappointed in the results. We really haven't made a noticeable difference in these kids lives. Sadly many of the progress that was made would have come anyways through the process of aging.

Was an Academic Life Skills class ever given as an option? Is he diploma bound? The county I live in has a community connection program for 18-21 year olds to learn job skills. Ask if your school district has a similar program.
