We call the letter "W" a "double-U" because its name and shape come from the ancient practice of writing the /w/ sound as two "U"s (or "u"s) placed side-by-side. This originated from the Latin alphabet, which used a single letter for both the 'U' vowel sound and the 'W' consonant sound; as languages evolved, particularly with the adoption of the Latin alphabet by Germanic languages, the need for a distinct symbol for the /w/ sound led to the doubling of the 'u'.

In Spanish the letter W is called Doble Uve (or Double V). English is an unusual language when it comes to things like this among other things.

I will guess that it comes from Latin. in most of roman or imitating roman writing on buildings and statues in Nortern Italy you'll see V used as U.
