It's a nice gesture but it’s ultimately up to the patient to take accountability and make their own appointment. The patient needs to show some level of commitment to their health, I think making an appointment is a start.

Specialists office here, we prefer that not happen. We need to talk to patient, advise them of estimated payment etc.

Absolutely no! I have been in the industry for 17 years going on 18 years. There is no way in administrated/front desk has the ability and a time to make those appointments.

The referring dentists send us an email with the referral and X-rays. They CC the patient and we call them to schedule. 90% schedule and they always show up.

We call the specialist and make an appt for the patient when they are in our office. Our part of the work can’t get done until after the specialists part most of the time so we have an interest in making sure the patient schedules with them

As an endo girl, we love when our referring offices call and make appointments. In just a few minutes we can get all the needed information!! 🫶🏻❤️Takes load off of both us and the patient.. win-win!

Maybe I’m just responsible. But I DO call and make the appt. My teeth are important.

We will defiantly call for them if they would like us too. Especially older patients or patients that are in pain. We send referral emails and X-rays over same day for everyone we give a referral card to regardless if we call for them or not.

Dani, We normally only call if patient is in extreme pain and the office can't get them in right away

Why don’t we hold their hands, follow them home, and make sure they brush and floss too!

I work in endo & I love when referring offices call because I get 100% of the information I need. BUT I have a couple offices who don't tell them patient that they have the appointment & then they end up no showing because they won't answer when my office calls, which takes appointments from people who do want an appointment.

At perio, send us the referral and we’ll call the patient three times! If they don’t schedule, we will let you know :)

We used to do that until we spend a ton of time on the phone being the middle man with going back and forth with appointment times and then them deciding to cancel. If they don’t go, they are aware of the severity. Our dr didn’t refer out often so majority of the time the patient schedules and understands they have to go.

When I worked in general I used to call the referring office as well. I work in endo. Now the referring offices will email me PA and referral which is awesome!

We have our patients sign something that they can’t be treated with our office until they’ve proceeded with treatment with the specialist. Accountability.

Think of it this way… take an extra 4-5 minutes to schedule the RCT appointment you will have the patient come back for the crown! You’ll get 2 out of 3 patients come back for the rest of the work !!

When I was in office I would call the specialist office and make the appointment. Now I work for a dental billing company and one of our offices is a perio offices and they have the referring office fax or email the patients information the they reach out to the patient with in 24-48 hours of receiving the referral.

OM here I would call the specialist to schedule the appointment! Typically I’d get the date for the patient and let the patient go and call back the specialist to give the information! Worked out well!
