Honestly, you nailed it. Hygienists are treated like machines expected to crank out production all day, deal with rude patients, and keep a smile on their face all while dentists complain about what hygienists pay should be and assistants overlook everything you handle daily. You’re expected to work at a high clinical and legal standard, carry the liability, and still get treated like outsiders. A lot of hygienists don’t want to work for dentists because too many offices are built on power imbalances, low respect, and outdated pay structures. If more workplaces valued the role instead of resenting it, they’d have fewer no-shows and a lot more loyalty.

Before I sold my offices my hygienists were making $75-85/hr here in the Seattle area. Finding one up here is impossible. No shows for interviews are very common. Quitting if they get two SRP back to back (despite getting 90 min for one side). Hygiene is a very important job, we appreciate you. But the industry is squeezing the dentist right now between insurance low reimbursement and the hygiene shortage driving up wages. Sorry you are feeling this way. I can understand. The market has put us against eachother.

I was an assistant too. Being a hygienist is very different and we do more than cleaning teeth. It’s so annoying!

I swear we need to rename the profession to dental nurses. People respect nurses and I feel like if they hear the term dental nurse then they're automatically going to respect us more. it comes down to absolute ignorance about what hygienists do. When I was going to hygiene school, my aunt asked me if I wouldn't rather become an assistant because they get to work beside the dentist so it must be a more important job? And it's like why do we all assume that what the hygienist does is less important than anybody else in the office?? by the way, I've worked as an assistant as well before I became an RDH.

Dentist resent us for the wage increase that everyone got after Covid. Assistants resent us for making more than they do. Patients resent us for communicating their condition to them. You can show up early and stay late, bring treats, and communicate bad news in the kindest way possible, it’s never enough.

I was a dental assistant for 13 years before I became a hygienist. I love when you said “ I went to hygiene school, which you are more than welcome to do” to ALL the nasty and bitter dental assistants that are so rude to hygienists. I don’t get it at all. Dental assistants work SO hard and so do hygienists… the competition and the drama and the gossip and the bitterness in the dental field is just so awful and exhausting. And don’t get me started on the patients. I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way and sending you love, you aren’t alone.

I was an assistant prior to being accepted into hygiene school. There is soo much I've learned in my 2 months of class, that I never would have learned while assisting.

I temp full time. I pay all assistants dust unless they speak to me first and are respectful in doing so. Hygiene school has equipped me to multitask and not seek acknowledgment of any assistant. Try to filter out as much negative feedback as you can, continue to be ethical, leave google reviews of offices and the doctors where you do not plan to return, ignore the hygienist in their 40’s/50’s, take occasional mental heath off days, know your worth and continue to be entitled boo 🤞🏽

The reason for the no shows- it’s because word gets around of how he treats his staff and how poorly he feels about RDH’s. I wouldn’t go there either.

Every job seems easy if you’ve never worked that job. Assistants have no idea what it takes to be a hygienist. And how could they? I think it takes a sense of maturity to realize that you don’t know everything about working a job… And a lot of people don’t have that maturity.

A Dental Hygienist is more Qualified than even a Dentist when it comes to Prophylaxis Treatment and even SRP, they are much like Paramedics who are more Qualified than even a critical care physician when it comes to emergency response medicine.

I hate being a hygienist. Ok, let me rephrase that… I LOVE everything hygiene. I was an assistant for 8 years before becoming a RDH. Insurance companies, patients, wages, being a “machine…” yea, I don’t like it. I’m going back to school. Healthcare is an amazing, but it drains every bit of you, ESPECIALLY when you care.

Check on your dental friends. We aren’t okay. Been a hygienist for 12 years and I can’t do it anymore. I refuse to compromise my own physical and mental health anymore for people who don’t appreciate it. Could you imagine if we spoke or treated patients how they treat us? I’m sad I picked a career that’s treated like a job with no opportunities for advancement, many offices don’t even offer basic benefits. Why are we shocked there is a shortage?

I love being a hygienist but it is exhausting having to manage grown adults feelings all day and dealing with Dr’s who do bare minimum. I’m thankful I work with a great team and we are all on the same page.

If it wasn't for RDH's finding decay the doctors would not have restorations to do and the assistants would not have a job. it all flows from hygiene. I told my coworkers if it wasn't for me they would not have work.
