AT SUNDAY DINNER, I CORRECTED MY WIFE THREE TIMES. HER FATHER NOTICED WHAT I DIDN'T. My wife was telling her parents about our trip to the coast. Halfway through, I cut in: "It wasn't three hours, it was almost five. And it was Friday, not Saturday." She said, "Right, sorry," and finished the story much faster than she started it. For the rest of dinner, she barely spoke. When she went to get dessert, her dad put down his fork. 1 "THAT'S THE THIRD TIME TONIGHT." I honestly hadn't noticed. A date. A price. Who said what. To me, they were just details. Then he asked: "Did any of that change the story?" It didn't. Nobody cared whether it happened Friday or Saturday. 2 THEN HE TOLD ME ABOUT HIS OWN MARRIAGE. "I've been married to her mother for 43 years. She gets half her stories wrong. I've never once corrected her in front of anyone." I laughed at first. He didn't. 3 THEN HE SAID THE SENTENCE I COULDN'T FORGET. "Every time you correct her in front of people, you tell them she can't be trusted. And you tell her you're not on her side." That landed harder than I expected. 4 I WATCHED HER WALK BACK IN. She was smiling at her mom. But I knew that smile. It was the one she used when something hurt and she didn't want anyone to see it. 5 I APOLOGIZED IN THE CAR. "I'm sorry I kept correcting you. It didn't matter, and I made you feel small." She was quiet. Then she said: "You do it with my friends too." I hadn't noticed that either. That was the worst part. 6 SMALL CORRECTIONS DON'T FEEL SMALL FOREVER. One interruption seems harmless. But repeated often enough, it can make your partner talk less, share less, and wonder whether you're listening — or waiting to prove them wrong. If a detail matters, bring it up later, in private. If it doesn't, let them finish the story. BEING RIGHT ABOUT FRIDAY ISN'T WORTH MAKING YOUR WIFE FEEL LIKE YOU'RE ON THE OTHER SIDE.
