@jfkmulder: Stefanus Johannes Paulus Kruger or just Paul Kruger, was born on October 10, 1825, on the farm Bulhoek near Cradock in the Eastern Cape. The Kruger family's ancestors were actually German Lutherans, but it is said that the beautiful Calvinist maidens of southern Africa were one of the main reasons for the Krugers' shift from the Augsburg Confession to the Heidelberg Catechism, so to speak. During his family's participation in the Great Trek, Oom Paul, as a young boy, was inside the laager when Shaka, son of Senzangakhona’s previous commander, Mzilikazi kaMashobane, and the Matabele attacked the Voortrekkers on October 16, 1836. He was later elected president of the South African Republic on four occasions from 1883, with each term lasting five years. Kruger was and remains a symbol of the Afrikaner struggle for freedom, to not be ruled by other empires or peoples, but to carve out their own future at the southern tip of Africa. #paulkruger #oompaul
