Fact checking is a form of accountability. We shouldn't be minimizing that.

What if the “fact checker” feels there is a pattern of avoiding responsibility, including changing facts to be favorable? what is a better alternative to pointing out that facts are being bent? Just being more direct about the concern perhaps?

No, sorry the facts are always important. If we can agree on reality, we don’t have a solid ground to begin our discussions.

If you're arguing about how long someone slept, something is broken

Nope. The person being fact checked is trying minimize the problem/excuse their actions, which is what makes the fact checking necessary in the first place.

doesn't matter how close to reality I am I'm getting fact checked because he doesn't actually care about what my experiences are.

If its a quarter to 10 and the person had said they slept until 10. I can accept that we are sharing a similar reality but if they are saying 9, I cannot. They are straight up minimizing what they did.

fact checkers might also have grown up with a parent that was habitually dishonest and they are overcompensating to make sure that isn’t happening in their romantic relationship

fact-checking is fine when it actually matters. in this example however, the fact that she slept in late is the point, not the exact time she woke up. so the fact-checker is choosing a stupid hill to die on and it is frustrating their partner, who is clearly trying to communicate something else, and now has to stop and clarify the minor detail she got wrong on her way to actually making her point.

It’s hard to have a real conversation when my partner edits the story to fit his narrative. I’m just trying to fact-check and make sure we’re on the same page about what actually happened before we even discuss the issue, but it turns into an argument about the timeline itself.

She thought she was making huge strides in repairing my trust when she told me she called her ex the other day and only spoke for 15mins. The call records said it was 48mins, and I’m the bad guy.

I find this particularly hard I find it hard to trust when somebody exaggerates to have to make their point. if they tell me how they're feeling and back it up with a few realistic facts then I'm more likely to believe them and support them

Way too many times, bending the truth or intentionally omitting things is a form of manipulation to see how much you can get away with in the future, especially when coupled with defensiveness like this. This message seems to encourage and enable that behavior.

I love the description on both sides, but where is the discussion of the threshold for these parties to meet? We have fact checking extreme versus underplaying extreme. You state, both parties have to change, but then nowhere do we discuss the objective. Its just a trigger pull video.

I have to disagree with "sometimes the facts don't matter." Facts absolutely matter. If, over the course of a conversation, 5% of a fact is cut off of each detail, you end up with a totally different conversation. Facts always matter. Now it's not cool to cut off or interrupt to "Fact check" but it's equally not cool to lie about the Facts.

Also ppl who do either of things with the intention to gaslight/manipulate will usually do both AND are inconsistent. Like will misrepresent something one time and shame you for fact checking while also fact checking you over everything. Most people don’t do either of these with the intention to manipulate, and when that’s the case they are usually pretty consistent on either being someone who fact checks or minimizes/exaggerates. Either way, in healthy conversations a fact checker won’t be scrutinizing every minor detail and a mimimizer/exaggerator won’t be completely off.
