Genuinely. As someone also on this path. My biggest question is is it actually Christianity and Jesus?? Or is it AMERICAN Christianity and American Jesus?

It’s wild that I have never heard deconstructed used in this way and I never really had a term for what I went through so thank you for that. When I tell people I’m no longer Christian it feels too casual where as deconstructed eludes to the fact that it took a ton of critical thinking to arrive where I’m at- free from religion

Where you ever scared during this journey of deconstruction that you could be wrong? It terrifies me to think “what if I’m wrong and end up in hell?” It actually hurts my heart to try to imagine who I am if not a Christian. I hope this makes sense. Thank you for sharing your experience.

It’s been great to hear your story growing up Christian and now in 20s have had a lot of same thoughts. One thing that holds me back from fully deconstructing is visions and prophecy. For example I’ve had people pray over me and God speak through them to things so specific in my life how could anyone know. Or for example people have dreams about me again things so specific going on in my life that no one couldn’t possibly know. I wonder what can be explaination. If anyone can share input appreciated

One of the most powerful parts of my deconstruction was realizing I didn’t want my kids to have the immense fear, guilt, and shame that I have. It has taken and will take me years to undo that.

As an intellectual (I went to an Ivy League for undergrad and studied neuroscience), I had a moment like this in my Christian journey but a few things always brought me back. One, if God is infinite and his ways are infinite too, there’s no way for my limited and finite mind to understand all of his ways. We don’t know how God will judge us - those who knew Him and those who didn’t. We may never know. And when you see the most brilliant intellects of all time (like Einstein) acknowledge and accept this too, it was an additional layer of affirmation for me. Secondly, and in a similar sense, I don’t consider any human to have all the answers to morality. A universal law and truth makes sense for a world that was clearly designed to be orderly. And given Jesus was a literal genius in morality, I find it easy to trust the Word in its fullness. Nonetheless, I’m so sorry that your experience has been rooted in shame and fear. I do think Black people (especially descendants of slavery like myself), tend to have a different Christian experience overall, but I do think it’s very possible to accept and submit to God’s ways and not experience shame, fear, etc.

I also continued to attend church while deconstructing and reached a point where I couldn’t take communion and was actually kind of disgusted by the process and couldn’t even sing the worship conga any more. It felt like a betrayal to myself and to truth and it felt like perpetuating extremely harmful rhetoric

Very similar story. We left our church when my son was a baby and I’m grateful everyday that he won’t be raised in that environment. My husband and I deconstructed (me first) and just celebrated 10 years married. We are pretty lonely at the moment but we are free and we have each other 🤍

It’s so difficult to leave Christianity and have to watch others stay with it. It seems as though they are against critical thinking even if they’re great people and it’s so saddening.

We did a similar path, separately. The kindest thing, my husband came to his conclusion WAY before me, but didn’t mention it. He let me come to my own conclusion WAY before me but waited for me to bring it up.
