@kylie.brewer: Non-Black students say the n-word ALL THE TIME— especially in high school. How can I get through to them?? 💔 tbh this behavior is way worse now than it was last year. #leftist #sociology #antiracism #education #chicago

if only black people are allowed to say it then this is hypocrisy, a slur is a slur so no one should say it!

I believe slur reclamation doesn't work, it *never* negates the meaning and the history or the slur. nobody should be using these words, but I think having fully *banned* word is an issue too. I just think it's important to recognize the linguistic difference between use and mention

No one does. No one should be saying it at school and especially non-black people to black people. I don’t approve of the use of the word at all. I’m black. I’ve only said that word 10 times , not even in my entire life and that’s only me regurgitating something I heard or whatever… it’s never been ok with me and my family doesn’t use it either

, I had a black friend told me I could say it because I was repeating something to him and just said it not thinking and he started laughing and he’s like did you said that with so much confidence and everything he’s all you get a pass to say it

If you are not black don’t say the N-word. I grew up in Houston, i would hear so many latinos say the N-word sadly. I think there is a lack of education of where that word came from exactly and how it was used to dehumanize the black community. So many Latinos believe their proximity of struggles to the black community gives them the right to say it. Which is not right either.

Kids do this cos social media has blurred the lines between good and bad behaviour and made bad behaviour look cool. There isn't enough good material to set a base moral values among kids. There need to be more of you. Keep up the great work 👍

The only way to reprimand it means the black students must be held accountable

Haven’t got a leg to stand on. Words are either harmful and defamatory or they aren’t. Shouldn’t and doesn’t change depending on the skin colour of the person saying it. No one should use the words, or everyone should be able.

As a Black educator, treat it as a professional language issue. It’s a slur as well as a cuss word. Neither are appropriate for a school environment.

I would say make it zero tolerance in the classroom period. Even for black people, it’s seen by many as a cuss word. I wasn’t allowed to say it in my home until I was 18 tbh. I would also talk to admin and get them to take the issue seriously school wide

Unless it's stigmatized for anyone to say it, everyone will say it. Black people don't use it as an insult, like that boondocks episode, they say it so much people don't even notice, and the world really just means friend essentially with the way they use it. With all these rappers saying it, all these YouTubers and TikTok's saying it, of course the new generation perceives it differently. They have never seen a world where that word was used to hurt black people, they have only seen a world where people use it to call each other 'buddies'.
