@leighstein: Syracuse University announced that it’s opening the Center for the Creator Economy, the first of its kind in the United States. But will this academic program help young adults succeed as creators or is it marketing to wealthy parents who are worried that their kids want to become content creators? #college #creatoreconomy #analysis #genz #media

It kind of doesn’t make sense, because algorithms are rigged right? So why get a degree in an industry where your ability to make a living is at the mercy of code?

It makes sense because a lot of millennial college faculty would rather be content creators on TikTok or with a podcast than the old-style “public intellectual” that writes op-Ed’s and trade press books.

I also see academia as sooooooo far behind the current media landscape that I wonder how this would even work in practice, but I do think it’s smart on the university’s behalf

Yeah mixed feelings here too… I do want people to take the creator economy seriously but I also think the authenticity that people respond to kind of needs to be self made, which of course can involve studying the work of others, but I think an individual, self-directed form of study rather than one delivered via an institution

This is interesting. I try to foster conversations about where media is headed with my students, and I offer students options to complete assignments as social media content. I’m at a small school, but I think we’re all grappling with the speed of tech progress.

A B.A. in content creation… I can see it. Somewhat like graphic art.

$400k to figure out what is going to be interesting on TikTok? Or is it that much to figure out how to rig the algorithm?

I think for the vast majority of young people, traditional college is irrelevant. I don’t think it’s necessary to devote 4 years to learning content creation.
