I’ve always been intrigued by the concept of flow, first introduced by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi — a state of deep immersion where work feels both effortless and timeless. We’ve all felt times when hours disappear and focus feels almost automatic. But I’m especially curious about how artists reach this state: what are the rituals, environments, or creative triggers that allow them to lose themselves in their craft? Unlike productivity-driven flow, creative flow feels more elusive — tied not just to focus, but to emotion, inspiration, and vulnerability. Through this series, I’m exploring how artists enter that space — documenting them “in their element,” unpacking what it takes to reach that zone, and translating for viewers what it feels like to create from within it. First up is Jory Lane, a violinist from Colorado Springs who has studied the instrument for over 20 years, with degrees from the Eastman and Juilliard Schools of Music.
