Theres a line of old growth American chestnuts in "northern state" specifically the farthest left hand trail, less then a mile from Hansons creek ✨️the Asylum was built in the early 1900s and the chestnut trees are on the farms property which is all walking trails now!

I found a handful of saplings in one of my local parks and uploaded them to the iNaturalist app where several people confirmed my suspicion and I freaked out cuz I was so excited that I was right and they were here 🥰

Fun fact! Chinese chestnut are being crossed with the American chestnut in order to have the resistance to the blight. However this hybrid isn’t as big as the massive American chestnut and that’s really sad to see.

People don't realize the sheer scale and quantity of American Chestnut trees that existed at one time. They were MASSIVE. If you can find a barn that's old enough you might be lucky enough to see incredibly long support beams made from a single tree. One of the few ways one can get a sense of the scale.
