I grew up going to this library. It was at risk being torn down. There was allegedly a lot of gang activity in the 90s and legacy recruitment that was happening for young kids; the area didn’t always have a good reputation. I was interviewed by a journalist reviewing about the space in 2002; very handsome, smart looking young white man who was compassionate and able to level with me, and helped me feel smart with his questions. I was able to articulate even then about how it was a rare common place with public amenities that served the historically marginalized, as a Glendle Middle School student (then educating Somalian and Bosnian refugees, and where over 35 different languages were spoken); it helped bring attention to keeping the library. Now there is a Glendale branch library, and the west side is getting gentrified. The West Side (Poplar Grove, Glendale, Guadalupe, Benchmark) is “the hood” in Salt Lake, an established, multicultural neighborhood.
