An old college roommate of mine found out something about her best friend at a baby shower. Not the big dramatic way you'd think. No screaming, nobody got slapped. Someone's cousin just mentioned, over a plate of little sandwiches, something this friend had done years ago to a girl they all knew, and all of a sudden a bunch of weird old moments clicked into place like one of those puzzles you can't unsee. She told me about it that night sitting on my kitchen floor. Then the next morning she got a text from the friend.

She told me about it that night sitting on my kitchen floor. Then the next morning she got a text from the friend. "omg are we still on for saturday??" with the crying laughing face. And my roommate typed "yesss can't wait" and sat there staring at her own message like someone else had sent it. And she went on Saturday. She went for six months of Saturdays. I watched her do it. She'd laugh at the same jokes half a second too late. She'd hug her and feel her own body stay stiff. She'd listen to this girl talk about how much she hated fake people, and just nod and eat her fries. She told me the strangest part was that nothing about the friend had changed. Same voice, same laugh, same goofy way of doing her eyebrows in the car mirror. She looked exactly like someone my roommate had loved for ten years, and it felt like hanging out with a very good impression of her. Then there were the group photos. The birthday posts. The "love you" at the end of a call, where your mouth says it while your whole brain is standing in the corner with its arms crossed. Because you can't always just cut somebody off. Maybe you work together. Maybe you're in the same friend group, or your families know each other, or you're just not ready for the fallout. So you act normal and go home tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. It's lonely, too, because they have no idea anything happened. They think you're still friends. You're the only one who attended the funeral. And I think that's what the weird feeling really is. It's grieving someone who's sitting right in front of you, asking if you want to split dessert. My roommate did eventually talk to her. It didn't go great, but it wasn't as awful as she'd been picturing either. In fairness, not everyone needs a confrontation, and sometimes people have changed and the person who told you has their own version too. You're allowed to take your time and find out what's true. Nobody needs a big announcement to step back quietly. But you also don't owe anyone an endless performance just to keep things comfortable. There's no weirder feeling than smiling at someone you've already said goodbye to in your head. If you're doing that right now, I see you, and you're not fake. You're just heartbroken in a way nobody at the table can see.
