@سَلامٌ: Qazi Muhammad Qazi Muhammad was a famous Kurdish leader and the first president of the Republic of Mahabad. He was born in 1893 in the city of Mahabad, in north-west Iran. Coming from a respected religious family, he worked as a judge before entering politics. The title “Qazi” actually means judge. In 1946, after World War II, Qazi Muhammad declared the Republic of Mahabad and became its president. He worked to build Kurdish schools, promote the Kurdish language, and organize the Peshmerga, the Kurdish army. He hoped to give the Kurdish people more rights and self-rule. Unfortunately, the republic lasted less than a year. When the Iranian army took back Mahabad in late 1946, Qazi Muhammad was arrested. He was executed on March 31, 1947 in Mahabad’s main square. Today, Qazi Muhammad is remembered by many Kurds as a national hero and a symbol of their struggle for freedom. The Republic of Mahabad The Republic of Mahabad was a short-lived Kurdish state that existed in north-west Iran in 1946. It was declared on January 22, 1946, in the city of Mahabad by Kurdish leader Qazi Muhammad. The new republic was supported at first by the Soviet Union, which occupied parts of northern Iran after World War II. Mahabad tried to create its own government, army called the Peshmerga, Kurdish-language schools, and even its own flag and postage stamps. However, the republic lasted less than a year. When the Soviets withdrew from Iran in late 1946, the Iranian army moved in and ended the Kurdish state. Qazi Muhammad and other leaders were arrested and later executed in March 1947.
