we use cell salvage in operating theatres. generally it is used at the site of bleeding with a suction yanker. personally, in my opinion, cell salvage is good for anticipated bleeding, however if blood is required urgently in an emergency it can take some time to not only set up the equipment but also for it to process before being ready to go back to the patient so therfore in some occasions it is quicker to give donated blood in more urgent cases where it is required immediately. Just my personal experience in that field

As someone with Crohn's (21yrs) and currently on dialysis for end stage kidney failure. I wouldn't even take my own blood from before bad health. Some illnesses are ingrained and waiting to be triggered. I'd definitely never drink an energy drink if I could go back. (Hence why my kidneys failed).

I chose to do this when I had an op 2 years ago. The doctors kept asking if I was a Jehovah’s Witness 😳 I politely reminded them this was my choice regardless of my religious beliefs 😅

Senior Biomedical Scientist in Blood Transfusion here! There is only one centre in the whole of the UK that can store frozen red cells- The National Frozen Blood Bank (NFBB) which is in Liverpool. It stores very rare blood types to be used for anyone who has these very rare blood types themselves (we’re talking sort of like, 1 in millions). A two year old in America had to have some blood from it! Anyway, it’s a very challenging and complex process (you can’t just “freeze” it as the red cells would burst). Also, once it’s thawed (also not straightforward! Certainly wouldn’t be ready for use in a real, need it now, emergency) it has to be used within a few days. It just wouldn’t be possible for anyone who wanted to, to store blood “just in case”. Agreed, cell salvage is a cool thing for elective surgery :)
