@not_the_real_ems: The Saola, also known as the Asian unicorn, is a critically endangered forest-dwelling bovid native to the Annamite Range in Vietnam and Laos. They were first discovered in in 1992 by its remains found in Vietnam's Vu Quang Nature Reserve during a survey. Saola’s are so rare it’s hard to calculate how many are left in the wild, so it’s estimated to be fewer than 100, possibly even just a few dozen left. Saolas have since been kept in captivity multiple times, although only for short periods as they died within a matter of weeks to months. They are threatened by intense poaching from indiscriminate wire snares set for other animals, coupled with habitat loss and fragmentation from agriculture and infrastructure development. #saola #saolaantelope #antelope #critcallyendangered #inhonor
