depends where you are in life. if you're winding down, running a business that successfully would be very stressful. and youd unlikely need 10M a year in retirement. if you're young, then yeah keeping it makes sense.

But you no longer working or having to run the company.. and never assume tomorrow will look like today in business.. reduced risk, stress and responsibility, and gain the one commodity you can’t buy.. time

Your forgetting a little less say 8M per year coming from assets is a LOT more stable and safe long term than doing it with a business, with all the things that can go wrong over time.

You can also buy a business that’s making $5m for 4-5x EBITDA when part of your proceeds. Invest in real estate etc

Mikey Partho :
It’s not $5m in fees but probably $2m. Could be higher if it’s a complex deal that requires restructuring as part of the deal. Plus no guarantee the business continues to make $10m it could hit tough times.

How is this some profound thought….Obviously a business is going to be generating more than just sticking cash into an etf….

All businesses have a life cycle. You should always sell when you are doing record sales.

But he is selling that for 10x remember he was only doing 10 mil prior.. according to you it was 15% which is 1.5 mil. But after the sale he would do after 50% cgt he would still be making close to 8 mil without breaking a sweat. When he was making 10mil working in the busness. Mate needs to go to a proper busness school

not every business seller would care about returns, spending a little bit of the capital slowly is a reward for years of hard work, whilst still getting small gains along the way

If you get the money upfront after sell you can be very if not totally passive. Keeping a business is at best somewhat passive to at worst 24/7/365. Further you can leverage out the money from your sale further adding to your net worth and have much better control on your income to effectively minimize tax against hard assets.
