I see product success as a spectrum between Rick Rubin and Steve Jobs. Rick Rubin says give no thought to the end listener, focus on what you wanna say and what is right to you and share that. Jobs says the opposite, focus on the needs of the end consumer and design backwards. One is good for art, the other is good for commerce. You can try to play both together, but I think defining why you’re doing it is key first: express yourself or serve others needs/desires? Both are valid.
