UPDATE Since 21st October 2025, when my brother was involved in a tragic road accident, my life and that of my family has completely changed. I have spent millions of naira on his medical care and even had to borrow money from places I never imagined, just to keep him alive. The accident was caused by Triumph Moses Okpara, who used his BMW vehicle to knock down my brother and other passengers who were inside a tricycle around the Suncity area. One of the victims of this accident tragically lost her 1 year and 6 months old baby. Lives were shattered in a single moment. According to Triumph Moses Okpara’s own explanation, he said he was returning from a mechanic after attempting to fix a fault in his car, only to notice that the issue had not been properly fixed. He claimed that he stopped around Wumba Junction to call the mechanic and complain, after which he became upset and continued driving. He further stated that as he approached Suncity, a blue bus suddenly stopped in front of him. In an attempt to avoid hitting the bus, he said he switched lanes and then noticed the tricycle (keke) coming from that lane. He claimed that was the last thing he remembered before seeing people on the ground and his car facing the Suncity wall. However, videos recorded immediately after the accident, as well as the point of impact and where the vehicle eventually came to a stop, clearly show that the car was moving at a very high speed. The police also confirmed that the vehicle was speeding at the time of the crash. This shows that the accident was a result of overspeeding, making him fully responsible for what happened. My brother’s injuries were extremely severe. We spent huge amounts of money and exhausted every possible medical option in an attempt to avoid the amputation of his leg, but eventually, the doctors explained that amputation was the only way to save his life. As a result, my brother lost one of his legs. Since the accident, Triumph Moses Okpara has made no meaningful effort to take responsibility or properly contribute to the hospital bills. At some point, he offered ₦500,000, and later withdrew the offer, saying I would not even receive that amount. My brother has undergone five (5) major surgeries, received over 15 units of blood, and the medical expenses continued to rise far beyond my capacity. That was why I involved VDM, hoping public attention would bring accountability. When VDM contacted Triumph Moses Okpara, he responded rudely and even stated that he would sue me, claiming that the money meant for my brother’s treatment was being used to hire lawyers. Following this, VDM made a video about the situation, which gained public attention and reached the FCT Police Public Relations Officer (PRO). We were invited to the FCT Police PRO Headquarters for a meeting. After the meeting, Triumph Moses Okpara was detained, but we were later informed that an AIG ordered his release, and he went home. Due to the festive season, my brother was discharged from the hospital, not because he had fully recovered, but to continue treatment as an outpatient. We now visit the hospital twice every week for dressing of his injured leg, and each visit is still very expensive. The spending continues with no clear end in sight. What hurts the most is carrying a responsibility I never planned for or prepared for. Just a few months ago, my brother had both legs, his mobility, and his independence. My own life, though not perfect, was stable. In a moment, everything changed. While many people are celebrating Christmas with their loved ones, my family and I are spending our days going back and forth to the hospital, paying bills with money we no longer have, and trying to stay strong through pain, loss, and uncertainty. All we are asking for is justice, accountability, and support, so my brother can continue his treatment, receive proper rehabilitation, and have a chance at rebuilding his life.
