SAHRC Investigates Alleged Online Hate Speech The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it has opened an investigation into alleged online hate speech linked to social media posts involving Mr Mark Saltzman. In a media statement released on 21 May 2026, the SAHRC said it had noted social media content allegedly showing the use of the k-word and other allegedly racially inflammatory language by Saltzman. The Commission said it started the investigation on its own and that the matter will be handled according to its constitutional and legal mandate. According to the SAHRC, the investigation is still at an early stage and will include checking whether the material is authentic. The Commission will also consider the matter according to its complaints procedures and equality laws. The SAHRC said the k-word remains one of the most painful and degrading racial slurs in South Africa’s history. It added that South African courts, including the Constitutional Court, have recognised the serious harm such language causes to dignity, equality and social cohesion. The Commission also condemned racism and any language or conduct that goes against the constitutional values of human dignity, equality and non-racialism.
