Owen this is an issue for insurers. Whoever your insurance company are/landlords insurance company are will look to understand the cause of the fire and will take legal action if a third party were at fault I.e alarm manufacturers. Please seek advice from landlord re their insurers or speak to your own insurers.

Problem with the alarms it is down to the tenant to check them, if they don’t work and you know, you have to tell the landlord and they have about 5-10 days to sort it out

Im no lawyer I think you’ve got a claim on your hands if the building isn’t fire safe with fire doors, carbon monoxide alarms and fire alarms not working probably

Who manages/is responsible for the communal areas? Is an EICR upto date for the flat and the communals? Same with fire alarms?

I’m not sure what you’re wanting advice on but my house burnt down in 2022 and we didn’t have any smoke alarms😅 May be different for rental properties but it didn’t affect our insurance or anything

Regardless of who’s responsibility it is by law to check the fire alarm is in date, don’t you think that you should check it yourself anyway, considering it’s yours and your loved ones safety on the line if it’s faulty

As a letting agent we are responsible for making sure the smoke alarms are working in inspection and must be dated within the last 10 years. If they are out of date you need to find out who’s liable for ensuring they are compliant

Legally, the fire alarms should be checked frequently, regular homes it should be checked once a year if it’s a residential building then it should be every 3-6 months, if it’s not in date talk with a lawyer and they’ll help you get first of all compensation for the fire and mental scaring ect, aswell as new fire alarms throughout the building that will be checked

Depends if you own or rent the flat. If you own it’s your issue. If you rent then the letting agent/landlord is usually responsible for the smoke alarms being tested a minimum of once a year as part of of the British standards BS5839
