Another reason I think the dark fantasy trend never gets real traction for long is that the phrase "dark fantasy" applies much more to concepts and themes than it does aesthetics. Most people who like "dark fantasy" actually like what is more accurately described as "sword and sorcery" or just simply "vintage fantasy".
