In November 1970, authorities in Los Angeles discovered a severely neglected girl who became publicly known by the pseudonym Genie Wiley. Genie was nearly 14, but since she was around 20 months old, her father had kept her almost completely isolated inside a small room. For much of the day she was restrained to a child’s toilet, and at night she was often placed inside a crib with her movement restricted. Her father reportedly discouraged anyone from speaking to her and punished her for making noise. When Genie was discovered, she was severely malnourished, had difficulty walking and could barely communicate. Her case quickly attracted psychologists and language researchers because she had grown up with almost no opportunity to learn normal speech. Researchers worked with Genie for years, and she did learn words and ways to communicate, but she never fully developed typical language abilities. Her case eventually became one of the most famous and controversial studies involving language development and extreme childhood isolation. Genie’s parents were charged with abuse, but her father died by suicide shortly before he was scheduled to appear in court. What happened to Genie after her rescue was complicated too, as she moved between researchers, foster homes and care facilities over the following years. Do you think researchers helped Genie, or did they eventually start treating her more like a study than a person? Follow for more true stories, documentaries, and cases that are stranger than fiction
