I’m 43 and my parents divorced when I was 3. My mom remarried when I was 7 and I got the absolute gift of seeing my mom in a loving marriage with a devoted man. My bio father hasn’t called me in almost a decade and has never made an effort to know my children or my sister’s children. Let me be the first to say that divorce can ABSOLUTELY be a gift. I can’t tell you how many times through the years I thanked my mom for choosing a happier life for herself and us. A happy mother is the best gift to children.

I think that’s why they’re congratulating you. Of course it’s devastating that the life you’d hoped and planned for isn’t reality anymore but if the alternative to divorce is staying miserable, unloved and feeling alone, then leaving can absolutely be a good thing.
