It can hurt sometimes. It’s usually called a heat spike. Some products are worse than others. If it happens—take your hand out until it feels normal and put it back in, usually it won’t get hot again!

A heat spike is what it is! It’s due to the polymerization of the gel (going from liquid to solid). The heat is caused from the extremely fast rush of molecules trying to stick together (causing heat) and depending on the product it can be hotter or cooler. Usually this can be solved by doing a partial cure with a little handheld lamp before doing the final cure in the big lamp ooor a low-heat setting (usually 90 seconds) Your nail tech should know this and warn you though!
