I used to carry a gnawing feeling in my gut for an entire day while pretending everything was fine. I’ve worked with the body and nervous system for 30 years, but one of my most important lessons came from learning to listen to my own. As you hear this, notice whether there’s a feeling in your body you’ve been trying to ignore—and tell me if this experience is familiar. I would stay busy, analyse the feeling or distract myself. But it stayed. Not because it was trying to punish me. Because I hadn’t acknowledged it. Now, when I notice that familiar sensation, I stop and ask: “What do you need me to know?” And often, the answer is simple. I’m overwhelmed. I’m disappointed. I need to say no. I’m avoiding an important conversation. Something in my life is no longer aligned with what matters to me. The feeling often softens—not because I’ve fixed everything, but because I’ve stopped abandoning myself. Try this when you notice an uncomfortable sensation. Place your attention gently around it. Slow your breathing.
