I feel the same about appliances from the 90's which lasted 20+ years and now my appliances last 2-5 years... I wrote this before I got to that part of your video sorry but I also fully agree

Look up "The Phoebus Cartel" This was no accident, it was LITERALLY an international conspiracy of planned obsolescence. And not even the tinfoil hat kind of conspiracy, no they had BOARD MEETINGS and standardized tests to MAKE SURE no one was selling lightbulbs that lasted too long

But that light bulb is super dim and makes orange light. We could make our bulbs last super long too but we like bright lights.

Basically everything is made like this, the shorter the life span, means it breaks, or wears out and you buy more, in tern they make more money, its all about money...

Planned obsolescence; the practice of designing products with a limited useful life to encourage consumers to buy replacements and stimulate demand

Another take. The average wage in 1901 was 10-20 cents an hour. The average light bulb was 40 cents, because that bulb is very labor-intensive to make. So that bulb would likely cost 3-4 hours of your pay. Do you make $20 an hour? That bulb is now $80. Actually more, since wages have never kept pace with inflation. We could do that. Nobody would buy them.

I often have this similar level of mad about tires…the only reason we have tires that wear down is to create jobs

Oh yeah, plan obsolescence. That's what it's called but it is specifically designed so that's for a shorter time so that you could buy another one and make that company more money

if it lasts a lifetime you only need replacements if it falls. less sales.

I don’t believe this story. Because how is there somewhere that hasn’t had a power cut since the 1800s? Surely they’ve had to turn the network off to do maintenance upgrades. Surely the wiring to the light is a massive fire hazard? When they upgraded the rest of the building, how did they leave that lightbulb on? I have questions

What I have to ask is what it’s made of because maybe there’s stuff in it that’s not safe.

The concept you're tickling is called planned obsolescence, and the reason why no company would ever make another 100 year last light bulb is cause they'd sell a lot once and then like 1 or 3 a month. If I could I'd make a company which cycles through things that'll lasted a 100 years, and when I've made all the things, downsize to maintain the warehouses/sell from it

2 and half months? I don’t remember the last time I changed my light bulb and I’ve lived here for 7 years

the reason why we don't have lightbulbs like that is simply because there's no money in making something that lasts generations. just like there's no profit in cures, but there's plenty of profit in remedies. money always wins here, sadly

modern light bulbs only last for 2,5 months on average? I bought mine over two years ago, and out of the 25-26 months I've had it, italmost continously for at least 18 of those months 😅 never changed it, and only turn it off if I'm travelling and staying out of the apartment for a week or more

Very much so. I work in HVAC and most are said to last around 10-15 years but there are people we get calls from for a tune up and it’s 30/40 years old and still works just fine for them
