I went to Greece when I was sixteen. All the historical sites had a small museum next to it with broken plates and pots and the guides would just be like “sorry, all the big pieces are hostage in the British Museum” 😭😭😭

Ooo we talked A LOT about this in my art history masters program. Where I always come back to is that it doesn’t matter if the original countries have the means of “preserving” these objects. If Nigeria wants to melt down the bronzes, let them; it’s their art. It’s literally colonial white supremacy that says “we know how to treat your stuff better than you do.”

Thank you for not showing the picture of my peoples heads. Heads in our culture are extremely tapu (or sacred) and it’s a huge dishonour to our people to withhold them (let alone the fact they’re human body parts so just WTF?!). Basically they’re just doubling down on their colonisation on us (Māori) by withholding MORE of our taonga (treasures). Is it not enough to sign a Treaty and reneg on it without having to CONTINUE to take from us? 🫠🥴
